Who is Emma Sulkowicz?

Emma Sulkowicz is known for her work as an activist, artist, and pivotal figure in the movement to end sexual assault on college campuses. In 2014, she made the performance art piece "Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight)," in which she carried a dorm room mattress to symbolize the burden survivors carry. This work made her a symbol and advocate for addressing sexual assault in academic communities. In recognition of her contributions, Emma has received prestigious awards such as the Woman of Courage Award, the National Student Movement Builder of the Year Award, the Susan B. Anthony Award, and the Ms. Wonder Award, presented by Gloria Steinem.

Following her graduation from Columbia University, Emma continued to speak publicly and exhibit her art. Ultimately, her passion for activism led her to pursue a career in Chinese Medicine to further aid individuals in their healing processes. In 2019, she began a Master’s of Science program at the Pacific College of Health and Science. She graduated at the top of her class in 2023, earning the yearly award for academic excellence.

During her time at Pacific College, Emma completed an externship at her alma mater, Columbia University. There, she had the honor of working on a notable fertility case, highlighted on the testimonials page, and took on cases that involved the connection between stress and TMJD. She also completed an externship at OnPoint/NYHRE, a harm reduction center where she still volunteers her acupuncture services today. There, she has worked extensively in holistic addiction recovery and explored the psycho-emotional overlap between low back/sciatic pain and depression. Emma is dedicated to providing personalized care that empowers individuals on their healing journeys.
